Tourist Activities in the Maldives
Because of the geography, climate and ecology of the Maldives most of
the activities available to tourists are involving the natural features of the
country.
Sea:
There are many water sports available to tourists in the Maldives that
involve utilizing the water, wind and marine life. Tourists are able to go
snorkeling and diving to see the thousands of species of fish and are also able
to go fishing because of the abundance of fish. Night fishing and diving is
also advertised to tourists. All resorts are equipped with all the equipment,
staff and training services required for the water activities. Diving in the
Maldives will generally take place along a reef, a wreck or underwater channel
where the atoll meets the ocean. Surfing is also very popular on the North and
South Malè atoll because the Southwest monsoon brings in large and regular 1 –
2.5 meter swells during June to September. Other water sports such as kayaking,
sailing, jet-skiing, water skiing, kite surf and parasailing are available.

Cultural:
Tourists are able to travel to an ordinary Maldivian
island to experience the local culture. Spa’s are also a popular tourist
activity using virgin coconut oil and age old spa techniques. Tourists are able to
buy arts and crafts, watch local folk and music performances, visit mosques,
tombs, monuments and old cemeteries. The Islamic Center is the most famous
landmark in Malè and is also the biggest mosque, catering for up to 5,000
worshipers and a must see for tourists.
Tourist are also able to take seaplane tours to deserted islands, from the airport to resort and also for scenic tours leaving from many points including the capital Malè. There are also fifty one registered and operating cruise boats in the country accommodating for day trips to long overnighters. An example of this is the ‘Eagle Ray’ with the Maldives Boat Club.

most locals practice the Muslim religion and this requires people to cover up when
in the vicinity of locals.
