A Report for the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development
The Republic of Maldives is a country made up of a group of approximately 1,109
coral islands that are grouped in a chain of atolls. The country is situated in
the Indian Ocean in South Asia and SW of India. The total area is 90,000km2
and is 823km from north to south and 130 km from east to west.
The Republic of the Maldives is marketed as a tourism country with 89 resorts ranging from family holidays to luxury getaways.
However there are concerns about the sustainability of the tourism industry, which this report details.
